Wrap-Up of NFL Week 1

Well, it was quite a weekend of football that we just witnessed. Adrian Peterson ran wild over the Browns, Drew Brees threw 6 TD's against the Lions, and the Patriots and Chargers escaped with wins over teams they should have blown out.

Some observations:

  • The Kansas City Chiefs are a scrappy team. Let us make it clear, this does not mean that they are a good team (although it's tough for any team to look good again the Baltimore defense). They keep themselves in games though, and once Cassel gets healthy the Cassel-Bowe combination could be potent.
  • The Cleveland Browns are not very good. While the Vikings do have a top-five defense, the Browns failed to move the ball except at the end of the game when the Vikes' backups were in. This included one horrendously thrown INT by Brady Quinn and a fumble where the ball slipped out of his hand as he tried to throw it. Could be another long season in Cleveland.
  • Mark Sanchez looks like the real deal. Of course it helps to have a Rex Ryan coached defense behind you and it is only one game, but he seemed poised and confident. The Texans were supposed to be a possible playoff team; they didn't look like it on Sunday. It also doesn't hurt to throw your first NFL TD to a receiver who doesn't have anyone within 20 yards of him.
  • Tom Brady is not back yet. Yes, he led the Pats to another comeback win in the 4th quarter last night, but the Bills helped a lot with that. He does not yet look confident in the pocket and is definitely favoring the left leg that he injured last year. All of Patriot Nation held its collective breath when Brady took off and scrambled for a first down late in the game. A crushing loss for the Bills.
  • The Chargers have a long way to go to be Super Bowl contenders. Yes, it is Week 1. And yes, the Raiders running attack was better than expected. But, when the opponents starting QB is 12-30, you should not have to eke out a victory with under a minute to play. The Chargers looked sloppy last night, though they did pull out the W. If they want to be a serious contender, then they need to be blowing out teams like the Raiders.
